A new Conservation Area Appraisal and Article 4 Direction for Deptford High Street and St Paul's Church Conservation Area
Overview
St Paul's Church and Deptford High Street were designated as Conservation Areas in the 1970s. This was in recognition of the exceptional quality of the Church and spaces around it, and the survival of rare and unusual buildings that developed between the 17th and 19th centuries around the historic road to Canterbury (now the A2) at its crossing point over Deptford Creek, and the nearby Royal Naval Dockyard on the Thames.
The Conservation Area is considered to be at risk of losing its special character. This is due to lack of building maintenance, unauthorised works which remove historic features, and new development which does not successfully reinforce the area's special character.
Between December 2018 - March 2019 consultants reviewed the area on behalf of the Council and produced a new draft Conservation Area Appraisal, and proposals for the future mangement of the Conservation Area. The Appraisal will, if adopted, become a material consideration in the planning process and will help the Council to target future action to preserve and enhance the area.
The Council is now consulting local groups, business owners, residents and statutory bodies including Historic England on these proposals. You can find the documents at the foot of this page.
Why your views matter
The Council aims to raise awareness of the importance of this area, and promote consideration of how it can best be preserved into the future.
The Council is seeking your thoughts and opinions on the contents of the Conservation Area Appraisal including the management proposals contained within it, on the proposed Article 4 Direction, and on the proposed changes to the boundary.
Your comments will be used to amend the proposals as appropriate, and the revised proposals and a report detailign the results of the consultation will be taken to Mayor and Cabinet in October 2019.
