Surrey Canal Triangle SPD

Closes 21 Oct 2019

Opened 16 Sep 2019

Overview

The Council will be preparing a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) for the area known as the Surrey Canal Triangle. We are seeking your views to help understand what local residents and stakeholders think about the area and what should be included in the SPD.

What is an SPD and why do we need them?

A Supplementary Planning Document does not create new policy but sits within existing planning policy context in order to provide more detailed planning guidance, particularly on design qualities and for the type and nature of development that would be considered acceptable in an area.

If adopted, the SPD will be considered in determining planning applications in the area.

SPD’s also play an important role in the implementation of Lewisham Council’s priorities which are;

  • ‘Open Lewisham’
  • ‘Tackling the housing crisis’
  • ‘Giving children and young people the best start in life’
  • ‘Building and inclusive local economy’
  • ‘Delivering and defending: health, social care and support’
  • ‘Making Lewisham greener’
  • ‘Building safer communities’

The Surrey Canal Triangle is a strategic site allocation in the Council’s Core Strategy Document which was adopted in June 2011. The allocation includes ambitions for extending Millwall Football club’s stadium, mixed use business space, much needed new housing, including a high proportion of genuinely affordable housing, a potential new train station and various other community facilities.

We are at the stage where we are informing people that we will be producing an SPD and offering a short questionnaire to help understand what local residents and stakeholders thoughts are about the area and what should be included in the SPD.

Please see the following documents attached at the bottom of this page for your information (they can also be found as part of the online survey once you click the link):

  • The SA/SEA screening report (Sustainability Appraisal / Strategic Environmental Assessment), is a document that the Council have to consult on, specifically with other Statutory Bodies, so as to obtain any comments on the appropriateness of the screening process for this proposed SPD.
  • The Surrey Canal Triangle Design Framework document, contains the start and background to the SPD, providing further baseline information relating to the site and current policies, for comment.

There will also be further opportunity to consult on the draft SPD  once it has been produced.

Why We Are Consulting

This is a significant site in the borough and offers many opportunities to make lasting and sustainable improvements to the area, which would benefit local residents in the immediate and wider area.

We want to hear what you have to say about the area to help shape the SPD.

Please click the "Online Survey" link below to answer a short questionnaire about the site and SPD and for an opportunity to give us any other comments about the site that you might have.

If you would like to be kept in the loop about the Surrey Canal Triangle SPD work then please email urbandesign@lewisham.gov.uk to be added to a mailing list.
