Proposed Motorcycle Parking Charges

Overview

Motorcycles currently park for free throughout Lewisham. That is set to change with the proposed introduction of emissions-based parking charges.

After declaring a climate emergency in 2019, Lewisham Council launched its Climate Emergency Action Plan, detailing how it intended to tackle the issue, and outlining its aims to become carbon neutral by 2030. Lewisham Council - Making Lewisham carbon neutral by 2030: our climate emergency declaration

To help tackle air pollution and protect the health of residents, the council introduced emissions-based parking permits for cars and vans in April 2020. The scheme has proved successful. Given that motorcycles are known to emit harmful pollutants, which can cause cardiovascular disease, we propose that they also pay parking charges.

Motorcyclists would need to purchase permits or pay per session in order to park in permit holder bays, Pay & Display/short-stay bays, and other bays throughout the borough, unless the signage indicates that parking is free for all vehicles.

Why your views matter

We recognise that the introduction of parking charges for motorcycles will have a big impact. Therefore, we would like to hear your views.

If you are a resident who owns a motorcycle, we would like to hear from you. We would also like to hear from any local business owners that the changes will affect, plus anybody who commutes into the borough by motorcycle.
